I was in this room: The Ear of the Sea

Sound installation, 26′ loop

“Come at 4 a.m. — it’ll be really silent then,” said the woman at the hotel reception. And so I did. The spacious and convex caverns of Auska fill with the low roar of the sea while the villa’s temporary inhabitants are asleep. The whole building — with its open and locked spaces — resonates like a living instrument. The residents returning from the slide are surprised to see me sniffing around in the dark, and chuckle. “Damn, we’ve ruined her silence…” What silence, when the microphone gain is turned up to max? I can even hear the tourists arguing behind two (!) walls in their room. But even when they are asleep, I am still intensely tuning my “quantum” hearing – maybe I am dozing off a bit. And then, slowly, very chorally, the hum of each Auska cavity wakes up.
